My hexie quilt is going to be one of my biggest projects ever. When my mom sent me the hexies she basted for me, together with mine I decided to start piecing right away. In case its your first time visiting, it comes to more than a 1600 one inch hexies. I am still adding more basted hexies to this collection. Most of the colours being used is either green or pink, so I'm adding blue and purple too.
(I apologize for the bad light in these pictures, its early morning and the sun is shining directly against the orange curtains right behind my cutting table.)
I started piecing hexies at random, 4 pieces at a time and by shade separating them light, medium and dark rather than colour. I have not really decided on a layout yet, but this morning I had an idea of making 'blocks' with 16 hexies in one shade. So far this is one placement I have in mind. Its rows moving diagonally from light to medium to dark, then starting again with light. So far I think I am going to stick with this placement, but I'm sure once I have pieced a lot more that this I will be able to see if I really like it and if it will work.
This has become a really nice pass time, especially on Saturday's when my husband watches every single Rugby match on tv.
I am using a light thread and was a bit worried that the stitches will be visible in the front, but the few stitches you do see, will definitely not be a distraction. I think because they are spaced so close makes the difference.
Enough playing around, I have to get busy cutting fabric for my Sugar Block Club and Lucky Stars BOM's. I still have to do April's block (sugar block club) together with May, so I have to get started, at least I've already picked out the fabrics I'm going to use for these blocks...
Linking up with WIP Wednesday over @ Freshly Pieced.
Happy quilting.
Those hexies are going to make an amazing quilt. You are so lucky to have sunlight causing problems with your photos. My problem is dull overcast skies with very poor light! I'm glad that I'm not the only one falling behind on blocks of the month.
ReplyDeleteThose are looking fabulous!! I'm also glad to know I'm not the only one who needs to catch-up on the Sugar Block Club. lol Hoping to get in some more piecing time today. Great work!
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of light and dark diagonals, I think that'll work really well - love the way you've got those yellow/spots creating a diagonal too! It's wonderful that your mum's been helping you, a real family quilt in the making!
ReplyDeleteI love hexies, and I love your hexie quilt. The colours make it shine, and I'm looking forward to seeing them joined and taken a photo of outside.
ReplyDeleteGreat! I never worry about the stitches showing through. I say, if they do who cares? Also, since these are one inch hexies, you don't have to baste through to the front, you can just baste on the back through the folded corners and then you can just leave the basting stitches in... I realize you didn't make these, but for the ones you add anyway... sounds like you are having fun!
ReplyDeleteLiking the hexie layout! The thread you are piecing them with looks great, I can't even see it. I like making the hexies, but putting them together is not my favorite part. Happy Piecing!
ReplyDeleteWOW!
ReplyDeleteLove some hexy piecing! Looking great!
ReplyDeleteIt's going to be a gorgeous quilt Marelize. I too love doing hexies; wonderful to just sit and chill while sewing them. Hey, you could have been doing them yesterday on your "lazy" day!!!
ReplyDeletewow that is a lot of hexagons. i admire your ambition!
ReplyDeleteThe hexie quilt is going to be epic! And I love having some hand-piecing to do in front of the tv too. I feel lost without it now :)
ReplyDeleteHexies intimidate me so much. Therefore I am super impressed when anyone does them!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful hexagons! Love the placement!
ReplyDeleteI like your hexies more and more every time I see them! One of these days, I'll work up to giving them a try.
ReplyDeleteFabulous.
ReplyDeleteHexagons are addicting and I love when someone does something different with them. I need to get back to my own hexagon project soon.
ReplyDelete1600 hexies? You must be mad! I love the idea of hexies and think I'd enjoy sewing them but wouldn't know where to start basting them.
ReplyDeleteI really don't know how i used to sit in front of the tv and not sew hexies... That's going to be one amazing quilt! I've one on the go as well... i'm hoping to finish it before i die ;)
