I was really eager to try out these gorgeous variegated cotton yarns to crochet a doily or two. So once I decided on a pattern I got started. But halfway through I realized I did not like it as much as I thought I would. Its still a pretty piece, but not what I thought it would be..
It was as though the design and pattern did not really pop. Maybe it all depends on the surface you're planning to use them on, but I was not too happy with the result. So I crocheted the exact same pattern using white yarn and I think it looks much better! It has a completely different look...
So I will just have to find another project for the rest of the yarns, I have no idea what to make yet... any ideas?

Thought the white certainly 'stands out' more, I do like the variegated. Would it show up better if it were on a tablecloth vs just on the table? It's been a long (really long) time since I crocheted any doilies. I did one really huge centerpiece once upon a time. Only one. I had to pay too much attention to what I was doing rather than just 'mindless' crocheting. :-)
I love this doily. Amazing work. Brings back so many wonderful memories.
Oh no! It must be quite fine yarn. What about edging on something. Pillowcases? A little girls dress?
Lovely work by the way
Your work is beautiful! I agree with you, don't really care for the color so much. Maybe if there wasn't any purple in it?? I do like the color of the yarn tho. Gosh, I would love to be able to make some of those, so lovely.
I love your doilies. I do think the white makes it stand out much better. Great job crocheting!
Beautiful !!!

Very beautiful doilies. Great photography too!
Lovely work! The white doily does pop more, but I like the varigated one too. I've crocheted some doilies in varigated yarn and I've had to undo them. Varigated yarn is great with the right pattern...if we can find it :) xoxox
When I first started making doilies, I leaned that lesson about using variegated yarn. If you want the stitch pattern to show up (which is really is the beautiful thing about doilies and the reason we make them!), you can't use variegated yarn. You want all your hard work to be shown off well. Maybe a row or two, but most of it needs to be a solid color. Yours are both beautiful though. I do like that variegated yarn you used, but the white does show the stitch pattern so beautifully! Found your blog through Annemarie's Link Party.
Very pretty Marelize.... !
So pretty! I have several saved that my Great Grandma had made. I even have a table cloth! Can't imagine making one of those :) Your photos show them off perfectly!!
That's beautiful! I've mastered the single chain, so anything beyond that is impressive to me ;)
