Looking back @ 2012...

This year has been pretty exciting for me when it comes to my quilting.  I made my 1st quilt, learned to free motion quilt (still a lot to learn), and my piecing has definitely improved too.

I discovered Leah Day's FMQ Blog soon after, and it opened up so many possibilities.

Below are some of the quilts I made, I added dates to some of them, just to show you how much I have learned.  Looking at my very 1st try at stippling, I have to smile and blush a little.  Practice.. practice.. practice.......

My very 1st attempt at Free Motion Quilting - I looked up the date, March 16, 2012

March 23, 2012 - Only ONE week after discovering Leah Day's Blog

Strips & Stripes (Various types of FMQ) - May 10, 2012

Hearts & Feather Whole Cloth - April 11, 2012

Jelly Sandwich - 29 May 2012
Dresden Plate Wall Hanging - September 12, 2012
Tree Wall Hanging - October 3, 2012

Purple Diamond/Pers Diamant - November 19, 2012
Looking forward to next year and to see what it will bring....
Happy quilting.

  2. Marelize, I've been following your blog from the beginning and it is absolutely amazing to see how your free motion quilting improved from where you started. Even with problems, you persisted and it did pay off.

What an example to anyone out there believing they cannot do free motion! Good for you.

    1. Thanks Hettie, I just love every moment of it........ Currently busy 'stitch in the ditch' free motion style, lol........ not as straight as it should be, but after this quilt I'm sure to get the hang of it, all I need is practice.......

    1. Oh its a lot of fun, I enjoy it sooo much. Its all practice, once you find a specific design that you feel confident to do, you'll find learning new ones easy to grasp. I enjoy stippling, and I suppose it will be my favorite above any other...

  15. I am still totally intrigued and utterly terrified of FMQ. Yours is lovely, and looks so accomplished. I'd never have guessed you were only doing FMQ a year! You're definitely tempting me to push myself this year :)

    1. I felt exactly the same as you. I watched countless video tutorials and then one day I phoned up a Bernina dealer and order my FMQ foot, and thought what the hell, if I cant do it so be it, but I had to try... And soon after I realized, its more FUN than scary.

  17. Hi Marelize
I have just come across your blog spot for the first time. Well done with your whole cloth quilting. It looks amazing. My name is Doreen can I live in Grahamstown. I have just arrived home from Cape Town with my new Nolting Longarm. I would love to be able to do feathers. I have watched many DVDs and utube clips but I suppose that it just boils down to many hours in front of the machine. Where do you live?

    1. Thanks Doreen, I live in Kriel, Mpumalanga.. literaly in the middle of 'nowhere'..lol Only kidding, but I do have to drive hours to get to decent shops, our little town does not cater to my quilting needs...

  18. Hi Marelize
I know what it feel like to live in the middle of nowhere. Grahamstown is 120km from PE and 130km from East London. Luckily we have a Jackson's here in GTN and it is well stocked. It is a branch of Degama Fabrics. Are you quilting on a Bernina with a BSR foot?
