This year has been pretty exciting for me when it comes to my quilting. I made my 1st quilt, learned to free motion quilt (still a lot to learn), and my piecing has definitely improved too.
Below are some of the quilts I made, I added dates to some of them, just to show you how much I have learned. Looking at my very 1st try at stippling, I have to smile and blush a little. Practice.. practice.. practice.......

My very 1st attempt at Free Motion Quilting - I looked up the date, March 16, 2012 |
Looking forward to next year and to see what it will bring....
Holy Moley! You made *amazing* progress in less than a year. Glad you had such a great quilting year :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Sara, I'm looking forward to learning.. I guess when it comes to piecing and quilting the possibilities are endless.
DeleteMarelize, I've been following your blog from the beginning and it is absolutely amazing to see how your free motion quilting improved from where you started. Even with problems, you persisted and it did pay off.
ReplyDeleteWhat an example to anyone out there believing they cannot do free motion! Good for you.
Thanks Hettie, I just love every moment of it........ Currently busy 'stitch in the ditch' free motion style, lol........ not as straight as it should be, but after this quilt I'm sure to get the hang of it, all I need is practice.......
DeleteWow...that is actually amazing how quickly you picked up the FMQ. I was looking at the tree wall hanging...that is only a few months later! Had not seen that wall hanging before... just beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThank you Karin, there is so many designs out there, but looking back at what I've done so far, I like stippling the most... It's a simple design yet it give your quilt so much texture.
Deletei have been doing the FMQ challenge on sewcalgal ....amazing how it all comes together with some practice...you have had an amazing year in FMQ ...where to now
ReplyDeleteI have quite a few UFO's I want to get done, hopefully I can tick that off soon...
DeleteI think a lot of us are looking back over the last year. I've learned so much this year, but mostly I've been having fun.
ReplyDeleteI there is no doubt Stella, it all is so much fun... :-)
DeleteVoorwaar 'n mylpaal - jy kan jouself maar bietjie bederf! x
ReplyDeleteEk kyk nie een oomblik terug nie.. :-)
DeleteWow, you can really let how far your FMQ skills have come. Great job!
ReplyDeleteIts been amazing knowing you through the blog.
Happy New Year!
Thanks so much Malini, Happy new year to you too...
DeleteLooks like you had a great year....
ReplyDelete.... and looking forward this one :-)
DeleteGorgeous FMQ! It is so addictive isn't it? Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteHappy new year to you too! There's no doubt, one you start you just cant stop...
DeleteWow what an improvement! I am still at step 1 but this gives me hope for 2013!
ReplyDeleteOnce you get the motion of it all, every type of FMQ is possible, perseverance and practice practice..
DeleteWow - I am very impressed at the progress you made (and your FMQ skills generally). That whole-cloth quilt is absolutely stunning.
ReplyDeleteThank you Adrianne!
DeleteThis gives me a lot of hope! I just started FMQ recently, and some days I feel like I'll never get better! :)
ReplyDeleteOh its a lot of fun, I enjoy it sooo much. Its all practice, once you find a specific design that you feel confident to do, you'll find learning new ones easy to grasp. I enjoy stippling, and I suppose it will be my favorite above any other...
DeleteI am so impressed with your FMQ skills! I will definitely check out that blog!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Heidi.. :-)
DeleteWow - your FMQ skills have really grown in one year! I only started my quilting journey in 2012 too and have just signed up to an Angela Walters FMQ class so hopefully with a bit of practise I'll make some improvements this year!!!!! I've popped over from Lily's Quilts Small Blog Meet Up - looking forward to seeing your next projects! x
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Sonia, I was astound at all the positive comments I've been getting, its a great motivation to do much much more...
DeleteI am still totally intrigued and utterly terrified of FMQ. Yours is lovely, and looks so accomplished. I'd never have guessed you were only doing FMQ a year! You're definitely tempting me to push myself this year :)
ReplyDeleteI felt exactly the same as you. I watched countless video tutorials and then one day I phoned up a Bernina dealer and order my FMQ foot, and thought what the hell, if I cant do it so be it, but I had to try... And soon after I realized, its more FUN than scary.
DeleteGorgeous work, wanted to say hello from the Sea of Stars Hop, I live in Arlington,
ReplyDeleteTexas, I have a blog and I stay at home learning to quilt too.. NO kids at home but I still seem busy..
Hi Marelize
ReplyDeleteI have just come across your blog spot for the first time. Well done with your whole cloth quilting. It looks amazing. My name is Doreen can I live in Grahamstown. I have just arrived home from Cape Town with my new Nolting Longarm. I would love to be able to do feathers. I have watched many DVDs and utube clips but I suppose that it just boils down to many hours in front of the machine. Where do you live?
Thanks Doreen, I live in Kriel, Mpumalanga.. literaly in the middle of 'nowhere'..lol Only kidding, but I do have to drive hours to get to decent shops, our little town does not cater to my quilting needs...
DeleteHi Marelize
ReplyDeleteI know what it feel like to live in the middle of nowhere. Grahamstown is 120km from PE and 130km from East London. Luckily we have a Jackson's here in GTN and it is well stocked. It is a branch of Degama Fabrics. Are you quilting on a Bernina with a BSR foot?
I have a Artista 180 (rather old machine) and I use the Quilting foot 29C.
