FMQ Friday - Messing around

I'm sure many of you know that Sewcalgal has again come up with a few challenges for this year.  So I thought I'd join in, or rather at least give them ago.

So I have been playing around, seeing what I come up with.

The first challenge is Threadplay.  Now I've only tried it out, and this is what I've done so far.  I would like to make another piece with different colour threads.

This little sampler measures 6 x 6 inches, it will not be the piece I'm going to 'hand in' as part of the challenge.  I want to practice a bit more of course and see if I can come up with something totally different using the same technique.  Do you think my thread buildup is too dense?

Another challenge is Feathers.  I'm just playing around with feathers, and different types of FMQ designs, to get a feel of what works and what doesn't.  This looks like a HOT MESS!  Then again, it is only to see what will work good together.

Once I'm going to make the 'real' sampler, I will use thread that blends, clearly using a darker thread is not a good idea.

I'm linking up to FMQ Friday with Leah Day @ The Free Motion Quilting Project and with can-i-get-whoop-whoop @ Confessions of a fabric addict

Happy quilting.

Hello Marelize,

Amazing work! How many miles of thread do you get through, or would you rather not know!!??

Love,

I don't think the feathers practice piece looks like a mess at all. I love the variety and unexpectedness of it.

You think the feathers practice piece looks like a "hot mess"???? I'm in a state of shock that you don't realize just how amazing that piece is. I get that to you it isn't actually a piece of work, that is just sort of happened while you were practicing.

Take another look, It is literally amazing. I don't know how big it is, but you need to do something with it. Maybe a pillow? Or practice quilt as you go using it and surround it with more of the same and make something big.

Your small threadplay sampler is an attention grabber! The contrasting orange thread ia a great choice and doesn't look too dense, it makes it look like there is a lot of depth to the design. It makes me want to give this technique a try.

Amazing work. The first sampler really caught my eye in the thumbniail on Leah's site, but in bigger pictures it is breathtaking.

Your feathers are really nice too. I'm so bad at feathers.

You sure have some great ideas! Making a quilt as you go quilt is a super thought!

I'm in shock that you don't want to submit that stunning orange block. It's amazing!!!!
And I really like the darker pink thread on the pale pink. Your feathers are so perfect.

You just had my jaw dropped! I think the density of the thread is fine otherwise the threadplay design would not work! I really love the pink quilting designs, they're gorgeous!

If that's a "hot mess" then I want to learn to create such a beautiful mess. What type of machine do you use for your quilting? Everything that I've seen that you have done has been amazing!!

Hello Marelize,

your quilting is really wonderful. I'm not a big fan of stippling but combining with treadplay it has a very nice effect. And your feathers are great. Thanks for very inspiring photos.
