..and I'm so happy I did! It was about time that I helped myself to my husband tools. I made my very own ironing board. The one I had was cheap, wonky and just not suitable for the job.
The piece of wood I bought was 18 x 71 inches which was a tad bit too long, so I cut a piece off. Which works great, now I have a smaller board resting on my cutting table which is ideal when in the middle of a project piecing blocks, and the large board that I can place right on top of my table for larger fabrics and of course finished quilt tops.
I made the ironing board with Pine shelving and upholstery tacks. Of course I used batting and fabric large enough to fold over the board and a hammer too.
Making the board was simple enough, but the trickiest part, because I was on my own making it, was pulling the batting and fabric tight around the edges. I wanted to use our staple gun, but could not find it anywhere.
The pencil artwork at the back was Kayleigh, while I was busy making the large ironing board, she decided to help...
I tried really hard to tuck in the excess fabric around the corners for a clean finish, with a little perseverance it came out looking great!
Now all I need is a decent iron!!

So 'n groot strykplank is baie lekker. Myne is van "presses wod" en vog kom deur onder. Dit sal seker nie met soliede hout gebeur nie. Ek sal nogtans bang wees om dit op die snybord te sit. Die bord raak so maklik hobbelrig van hitte. Ek vind ook dat 'n hoër hoogte as tafelhoogte beter vir my rug is. Ek het 2 bakstene bo op aan weerskante van 'n tafel met my plank daarop. Ek het 'n stoomyster van BErnina waarop ek absoluut verlief is.
Nice! Looks great and really useful. I need a super small one so I dont have get up and walk across the room everytime I have a little seam. It's on my list - why does my list have to be so long!!!

Oh wow what a great idea to make your own ironing board! I am thinking I might have to make one. And it's also given me an idea to make my own design board too...!

GF, great job, I have a pad that I can move to my quilting table or chopping block table,works great. Hey we all need a great iron that doesnt cost 100.00 plus dollars or so heavy us with arthritis can hold it. Lets us know if you find one, I did a buy a Black and Decker that has lasted a yr now, I use it everyday so that speaks volumes because I was going through them about every 3 months.

I totally want to do this! My cheapo ironing board is only 3-4 years old and wonkier with each ironing.
It's fun to do build things, isn't it? Good work. I'd like a large board but wouldn't have a place for it if I did.

I so need to make one of these, I'm currently slipping a piece of hard board between the ironing board cover and the metal board - it does the job but I'd love a much larger pressing area. Great job :)
